This volume presents thoroughly elaborated studies on various facets of mysticism from Francis of Assisi to Johann Sebastian Bach. It focuses in particular on Mechthild of Magdeburg, on Upper Rhine mysticism, especially Meister Eckhart and Johannes Tauler, and on Martin Luther. So, the volume embeds the Reformer deeply in late medieval mysticism. The essays elucidate the paths that mystical thought has taken through the centuries.
